Ben, the power of LinkedIn, or any networking for that matter, is not who you are. It's not about your profile! If I can get one point across, then it would be this, what matters is who you know and who those people know. Period.
It's hard enough getting your numbers up on one profile, imagine having to do that for more. Then the added complication of someone looking up your name, and seeing more than one of you. Which one do they click?
If you have many extra hours to spend online, then be my guest.
Suggested reading, "Linchpin" by Seth Godin.

This may be true for running a business while looking for work, but what if you are looking for work in two entirely different industries?
If you're an actor, I don't think that listing all your technology consulting experience and qualifications will get you any work, and vice versa.
I'm all for linkedin allowing the linkage of profiles and multiple profiles for different industries, but I don't see having one profile as being realistic in this situation.

Mark, Just be upfront and transparent. They'll find out on 1 profile or 2. Save yourself the headache of managing 2 profiles and just mention it in your summary.

Josh, I receive frequent contacts of career interests from my LinkedIn profile. However, I currently work in one city, while my family resides in another city. I'd like to show both cities in my profile header, so that recruiters find me in both cities. I can't figure out how to do this without creating multiple profiles, simply to denote my 'home' as 2 separate cities.
Any suggestions?

I recently got this same advice from a career consultant. She told me that it was okay to have personality and share my interests, but that talking about freelancing on LinkedIn doesn't make me look employable.
