Last week, LinkedIn sent out emails congratulating the top 1% and top 5% of their most viewed profiles.
Before you start jumping up and down with a sense of accomplishment, consider this.
LinkedIn now has 200 million users.
1% of 200M= 2 million
5% of 200M= 10 million
When was the last time you were excited to be one out of 10 million other people?
Granted, this was a brilliant marketing device which really made a lot of people feel special. And that’s a key ingredient when building an online community. But after some thought, the claim wear’s off to feel quite shallow.
What did you think when you got this email? Did you tell the world, only to later realize you were duped? Or do you feel like this truly is a great accomplishment? Would love to discuss.
I took it as an indication that my profile was reasonably well optimized, thanks to Joshua of course 🙂 But when you stop and think about it, that probably contains any number of dabblers and abandoned profiles, so it may be that top 5% should really just tell you that you don’t suck. Top 1% would indicate that what you are doing is working pretty well.
The better question is should I be ashamed for not being in the top 5%?
@KallieSulanke Haha. Didn’t think of that. I guess you have some networking to do!
