Recently, LinkedIn took down their list of industries. For years that page had no direct links to it, so I suppose it was just a matter of time before it was destined for the LI graveyard, along with Skills, Events and Answers.
This change got me thinking, just what are the best represented Industries on LinkedIn. In other words, would someone in the Transportation industry reap as many networking benefits as someone in Information Technology?
I get this question a lot actually. It usually goes like this, “I’m a high school teacher, should I use LinkedIn or some other network?”
Previously, I only had an intuition about this. However, LinkedIn did add one new feature, which I have now leveraged to produce a full report of the number of people representing each industry.
In the People search area, when you select Industry, the number of people in that industry appear in parentheses. Like this:
We recorded the number for all 148 Industries represented on LinkedIn.

What to Do With This Information
If you are in a low ranking industry, don’t despair. It doesn’t mean your networking will be impossible, just more difficult. On the bright side, the lower population of people in that industry could equal more intimate conversations ,i.e. “Hey, looks like there’s not a lot of us in here…let’s stick together.” If you are a manager or executive in a low ranking Industry, you can still network with other managers or CXOs, focusing on your role more than your field.
If you are in a high ranking industry, the pond is more like an ocean…more opportunities for sure, but also more competition. So play the game well. Have a good looking LinkedIn Profile. Know what to say when you reach out. And follow a repeatable strategy.
